On the Edge of the Marsh
Asphalt paving in Waupun works on ground near the edge of the Horicon Marsh, the largest cattail marsh in the United States. Elevation in the city ranges from about 870 feet at the Rock River to 941 feet at its highest point, so some neighborhoods sit low and wet while others drain well. Low ground near the river and marsh is where base and drainage matter most.
A long history
Seymour Wilcox founded Waupun in 1839 along the Rock River, the state chose it for its penitentiary in 1851, and the city charter came in 1878. Waupun calls itself the City of Sculptures for the outdoor works commissioned by Clarence Addison Shaler, including a bronze copy of James Earle Fraser's End of the Trail. Many homes near downtown are old, with narrow drives that need careful replacement.
Growth after 1990
The population was 8,207 in 1990 and 10,718 in 2000, holding near 11,340 since. Neighborhoods built in the 1990s growth now have driveways in the maintenance years, where crack filling, patching and sealcoating do the most good.
Two counties
Waupun spans Dodge and Fond du Lac counties, with about 7,795 residents on the Dodge side and 3,549 on the Fond du Lac side in 2020. Approaches onto county roads follow the appropriate county's rules.
Highways
U.S. 151 bypasses the city with four exits, and WI 26, WI 49 and WI 68 run through town. Businesses on those routes need lots that handle trucks.
Commercial and institutional lots
Correctional facilities, churches, schools and businesses all have pavement needs. We handle patching, sealing, overlays and striping on schedules that fit each site.
Scheduling and seasons
We pave from late spring through fall, once frost is out and the base is dry. Marsh-edge lots can stay wet longer in spring, so we may schedule them later. Sealcoating fits dry summer weeks; crack filling is best in the fall.
Downtown and historic homes
Older homes near City Hall, built in 1928, and the Carnegie library now housing the Waupun Heritage Museum often have narrow drives and detached garages. Replacement there means careful access and sloping drives away from foundations.
Overlay or replace
When the base is firm, an overlay saves money. When the driveway heaves, ruts or crumbles, replacement is the better value. We check first.
Maintenance for 1990s neighborhoods
Neighborhoods from Waupun's 1990s growth are now at the age where crack filling, patching and sealcoating do the most good.
Comparing quotes
Our written quotes list each item separately.
Sculptures and Shaler Park
The bronze End of the Trail in Shaler Park and the other Shaler sculptures draw visitors through town, and churches, schools and businesses nearby have lots that need regular care. We plan crack filling, sealcoating and striping around their schedules.
Wisconsin & Southern rail
The Wisconsin and Southern Railroad still serves Waupun, and industrial lots near the tracks carry heavy trucks.

A deeper stone base, fabric under the stone where needed and a surface that sheds water.
Do you serve both the Dodge and Fond du Lac sides?
Yes.
Can you pave business lots on Highway 49 or 26?
Yes. Approaches on state highways may need state approval, which we check first.
How often should I sealcoat?
Every few years, when the surface fades.

Standard blacktop runs about $5 to $12 or more per square foot in national cost guides. Your written quote is the price.
