A Town on Limestone
Asphalt paving in Ripon works on different ground than the lake-clay towns to the north. Ripon's bedrock is mainly limestone and dolomite of the Sinnipee Group, which makes the area a karst environment, and glaciation left the land with gentle relief. Soil depth and drainage can change from one lot to the next, which is why we look at each site rather than assuming.
History everywhere
David P. Mapes founded Ripon in 1849 and helped found Ripon College, first incorporated as Brockway College in 1851. In 1854, opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act met at the Little White Schoolhouse, an event Ripon celebrates as the birth of the Republican Party. Many homes near downtown and the college are old, with narrow drives and detached garages that need careful replacement.
A steady town
Ripon had 5,619 residents in 1950 and 7,863 in 2020, a slow and steady change. That means most driveways are well established; a lot of our work here is replacing driveways that have been patched and sealed for decades, plus maintenance on those that are still sound.
Highways and approaches
Wisconsin highways 23, 44 and 49 all serve Ripon, with 44 and 49 cosigned south of town for six miles. Driveways and business entrances onto state highways may need state approval at the approach. We check before planning approach work.
AirVenture connection
Ripon is the starting point for the Fisk VFR arrival into EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, which gives the town a front-row seat to the busiest week in Wisconsin aviation each summer.
College and community lots
Ripon College, churches and businesses have lots that need regular crack filling, sealcoating and restriping. We schedule around the academic calendar and community events.
Older homes near downtown
Ripon's oldest neighborhoods near Watson Street and the college have houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries, many with garages added later at the back of the lot. Those driveways are narrow and close to foundations. We slope them away from the house and use smaller equipment where access is tight.
Scheduling and seasons
Paving runs from late spring through fall, once frost is out. Sealcoating fits dry summer weeks, and crack filling is a fall job. For campus-area lots, summer break is usually the easiest time.
Maintenance pays
With steady population and established neighborhoods, many Ripon driveways are good candidates for maintenance rather than replacement. Filling cracks in the fall and sealcoating every few years can add many years to a driveway that still has a firm base.

Little White Schoolhouse visitors
The Little White Schoolhouse draws visitors year-round, and businesses downtown see more traffic than the town's size suggests. Small commercial lots there need regular patching, sealcoating and striping to stay presentable.
Highway 23 corridor
Wisconsin 23 runs west toward Green Lake and east toward Fond du Lac. Businesses along it see steady truck traffic; their entrances and drive lanes need thicker sections than car stalls.
