A River Town East of the Lake

Asphalt paving in Chilton serves the Calumet County seat, a small city along the South Branch of the Manitowoc River. The first residents, Moses Stanton, a formerly enslaved African American man, and his Native American wife Catherine, arrived in January 1845, and the settlement grew around a sawmill and grist mill. Chilton became the county seat in December 1853. Today it has about 4,000 residents.

Lake Chilton and river lots

Lake Chilton, a widening of the river, is used for ice skating in winter. Homes near the river can sit on low ground that stays wet in spring, which weakens driveway bases. We probe and rebuild with deeper stone where needed.

Steady growth

Chilton grew from 2,367 residents in 1950 to 4,080 in 2020. Most driveways are long established, and replacement and maintenance make up most of the work.

Rural surroundings

Farms and rural homes surround the city, many with long gravel drives. Converting to blacktop starts with testing the gravel, then rebuilding the base and planning drainage.

Highways

Wisconsin highways 57 and 32 and U.S. 151 serve Chilton, along with county highways G, F and Y. Approaches onto state and county roads follow those agencies' rules.

County and community lots

The county offices, Ascension Calumet Hospital, churches and businesses have lots that need regular crack filling, sealcoating and striping.

Scheduling and seasons

We pave from late spring through fall, once frost is out and the base is dry. Sealcoating needs warm, dry weather; crack filling is best in the fall. For towns outside our immediate area, we often group jobs on the same days, so booking ahead helps.

Older homes downtown

Chilton's older homes near the courthouse and river often have narrow drives and detached garages. We use smaller equipment where access is tight and slope drives away from foundations.

Gravel conversions

For gravel drives, we test the stone first. Clean, deep gravel can be regraded and reused as base; gravel mixed with clay usually needs to come out. Then we plan drainage and pave.

Overlay or replace

If the base is firm, an overlay can save money. If the driveway heaves or crumbles, replacement is the better value. We check first.

Edges and plows

Country drives and wide in-town aprons take plow damage at the edges. A compacted, supported edge holds up better than a sharp drop-off.

Comparing quotes

Our written quotes list each item separately.

Gravesville and the outskirts

Chilton annexed the former community of Gravesville, founded in 1849, in the late 20th century. Homes in that area and on the city's edges often have larger lots and longer drives than those near downtown, with more gravel to convert and more drainage to plan.

Calumet County roads

County highways G, F and Y lead out of town toward farms and rural homes. Driveways that meet those roads follow Calumet County's approach rules.
