Old Deeds and New Subdivisions

Asphalt paving in Kaukauna spans one of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin and some of the Fox Valley's newer neighborhoods. Dominique Ducharme received the first recorded land deed in the state here in 1793, for 1,281 acres obtained from the Menominee. The city incorporated in 1885 and later took the nickname The Electric City after its hydroelectric plant. Population grew from 8,337 in 1950 to 12,983 in 2000, then jumped to 17,089 by 2020.

North Side, South Side

The Fox River divides Kaukauna into North and South Sides, joined by four bridges. Older homes near the river and the historic locks often have narrow drives and detached garages, and their pavement has usually been patched and sealed many times. Replacement with a rebuilt base is typical.

Two decades of growth

Adding more than 4,000 residents between 2000 and 2020 brought new subdivisions to the edges of the city. Driveways there may be built over backfill that settles in the first few years. If yours has sunk near the garage or along a utility trench, we cut out the low area, compact and rebuild the base and repave.

Paper mill heritage

The Thilmany paper mill, built in 1883, has passed through many owners, from HammerMill and International Paper to Ahlstrom-Munksjo. Industrial and commercial properties in Kaukauna need lots and drives that stand up to heavy trucks.

Highways

I-41 runs along the northern edge of the city, with Wisconsin highways 55 and 96 meeting it there; U.S. 10 is just south and WIS 441 just west. Business entrances on state highways may need state approval at the approach.

Historic sites

The Charles A. Grignon House, the Kaukauna Locks Historic District and several churches are on the National Register. Homes nearby tend to be older, and that affects the scope of driveway work.

Bridges and traffic

With four bridges connecting the North and South Sides, traffic funnels onto a few streets, and businesses near those crossings see heavy use. Lots there need routine crack filling, patching, sealcoating and striping to stay safe and legible.

Scheduling and seasons

We pave from late spring through fall, seal in dry summer weather and fill cracks in the fall. For new homes, we prefer to pave after backfill has had at least a season to settle, or we add compaction and stone to reduce later settling.

Older neighborhoods

Homes near the river and the historic district were built over many decades. Their driveways often have layered patches, and some have been overlaid until they sit above the garage floor. We remove built-up layers when needed so the finished surface meets the garage flush.

Comparing quotes

Every written quote lists removal, base depth, asphalt thickness and extras separately.

Electric City heritage

Kaukauna took the name The Electric City after its hydroelectric plant was completed. Older industrial and utility properties near the river still have aging pavement, and owners there often need both patching and drainage fixes, since low riverside ground holds water.

Kaukauna Questions

Our new Kaukauna driveway sank by the garage. Why?

Backfill around new foundations often settles. We cut out the low area, compact and rebuild the base and repave.

Do you work on both the North and South Sides?

Yes, throughout the city.

Can you pave industrial lots for truck traffic?

Yes, with heavier sections in truck lanes and loading areas.

When is the best time to fill cracks?

In the fall, before freeze-up.

What does a driveway replacement cost in Kaukauna?

Standard blacktop runs about $5 to $12 or more per square foot in national cost guides. Tear-out and base work add to that. Your written quote is the price.

Our older South Side driveway sits above the garage floor. Can you fix it?

Yes. We remove the built-up overlay layers, rebuild the base where needed and repave so the surface meets the garage slab flush and drains away from it.
