The South Shore City
Asphalt paving in Fond du Lac happens where Lake Winnebago ends and two branches of the Fond du Lac River meet before flowing into the lake near Lakeside Park. The city settled in 1836, became a city in 1852 and grew from 29,936 residents in 1950 to 44,678 in 2020. It has twenty National Register listings and four historic districts, including South Main Street, alongside postwar neighborhoods and newer subdivisions on the edges.
Weather extremes
Fond du Lac holds some striking records: minus 41 on January 30, 1951, and 111 on July 13, 1936. The January average high is just under 25 degrees, the July average high near 80, and the city averages about 38 inches of snow. Pavement here goes through deep freezes and hot summer days, which is why base and sealing both matter.
River and lake lowlands
Neighborhoods near the river branches and Lakeside Park, which covers more than 400 acres on the lake, sit low. Water lingers after rain and snowmelt, softening the ground under driveways. We probe failing spots and rebuild with deeper stone where the subgrade stays wet.
Historic districts
Homes in the older districts often have narrow drives, detached garages and limited access. Replacement is common; we size equipment to the space and protect walls, trees and neighboring property.
Manufacturing and trucks
Mercury Marine, the world's largest outboard motor maker with about 2,500 employees, is the city's largest employer, alongside Giddings and Lewis, Brenner Tank, Saputo and Chicago Tube and Iron. Plant lots and truck routes need thicker sections and regular maintenance. We design truck lanes separately from car parking.
Highways
I-41 bypasses the city on the west with five interchanges, U.S. 151 bypasses it on the southeast and U.S. 45 runs north along the lake toward Oshkosh. Driveways that meet state or county highways may need approval from those agencies at the approach.
Hot and cold
Fond du Lac's 111-degree record shows how hot summer pavement can get. Fresh asphalt stays soft longer in heat, so in July and August we tell you to give it extra days before parking on it and to avoid turning wheels in place. In winter the opposite problem appears: water in cracks freezes and expands. Sealing cracks in the fall and sealcoating every few years address both seasons.
Lakeside Park neighborhoods
Homes near Lakeside Park and the lakefront sit low and close to the water table. Spring thaw is when their driveways are weakest. We plan base depth and drainage with that in mind and, where ground stays wet, may add fabric under the stone.
Scheduling
We pave from late spring through fall, seal in dry summer weather and fill cracks in the fall.
Buttermilk Creek and hilly corners
Not all of Fond du Lac is flat. Neighborhoods near Buttermilk Creek Park, a large, hilly park with an amphitheater, include sloped lots where water runs down driveways and along their edges. On those, we compact carefully, shape edges to resist runoff and make sure water does not end up against the garage door.

Fond du Lac Questions
Our Fond du Lac driveway near the river keeps heaving. Why?
Low, wet ground freezes and lifts pavement, then softens in spring. A deeper stone base and better drainage are the fix.
Can you work on homes in the historic districts?
Yes. We plan around narrow access and protect existing features.
Do you pave plant and warehouse lots?
Yes, with heavier sections for trucks and phased schedules.
Does a driveway on US 45 need state approval?
Changes to an approach on a state highway can need state approval. Work on your own property generally does not. We check first.
How long should I stay off new asphalt in summer?
Usually a few days, longer in very hot weather. For the first weeks, don't turn the wheels while parked, and keep kickstands and jacks off it.
